Ames Nicholas


AMES NICHOLAS, son of James and Mary Nicholas, was born in Butler County, September 6, 1810. His wife was born in the same year, in Montgomeryshire, North Wales. Their children are Jane, James, Richard (deceased), David D. and Martha Ann. Mr. N. has three sisters--Martha, Sarah and Ann. Mrs. N. has two sisters--Elizabeth and Martha. She was Mary Jones, daughter of Richard and Jane Jones. Mr. A.'s [sic] parents were from South Wales. They came into Allen County in 1835. Mr. Nicholas came in 1833. At that time there were only thirty-seven voters in a territory since carved into four townships. Inhabitants were obliged to go fifty miles to mill, and a hundred miles to market. Mr. Nicholas has been justice of the peace for forty years.
