Charles M. Shoemaker

Charles M. Shoemaker, son of Daniel and Sophia, and brother of Charles, Joseph, Jacob, Emily, Malinda, Daniel, George, Noah, Mary Ann, Andrew and Abraham, was born in Fairfield County, Oct. 8th, 1824, and came to Allen County in 1846. His wife is a daughter of Jacob and Rachel Lakemiller (see Andrew Stemen). She was born in Fairfield County, Sept. 4th, 1829. Mr. S. has held the office of assessor, and was township trustee seven years. In 1861, on the 20th of July, his house and shop with contents of both, were destroyed by fire. Mr. Shoemaker thinks that the jolliest time he ever had was at a religious meeting held in the old meeting house, which stood on the old fair ground, a mile south of Lima. Stuckey was the preacher, and Bowersox led the singing, while some dozen of the congregation were "tight as bricks."
