Hiram Thomas, M.D.


Hiram Thomas, M.D., was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 30, 1827. He married Rebecca A. Wade, of Cornhill, Massachusetts, daughter of Dr. Henry Wade, with whom he studied medicine. He graduated in Philadelphia in 1856. Dr. Thomas was practicing medicine at Maxville, Ohio, when, in 1862, he raised a company of volunteers for the war. His company was incorporated with the 114th Regiment of O. V. I., which was sent to Vicksburg. Soon after the close of the war, Dr. Thomas removed to West Newton, in this county, where he has every since zealously followed his profession. In 1872 he was elected President of the Ohio State Eclectic Medical Society, and in 1873 was again elected. The children of Hiram and Rebecca Thomas are five daughters, three of whom are married. The eldest, Minetta D., is the wife of Dr. J. T. Croney, of Walkerton, Ind. Annie M. married J. B. Marshall, now a merchant at Indiana City, Pennsylvania. Florence A. is the wife of Dr. Jas. H. Wells, of Van Wert, Ohio. Mary and Rose Alba are the names of the two youngest. Dr. Thomas' father, whose name was Hiram, married Anna Shields. They raised a family of nine sons and three daughters. Seven of their sons and three sons-in-law served three years in the Federal army during the war of the Rebellion. One son died from the effects of a wound received at Savannah. Mrs. Thomas has a brother living at New Straitsville, Ohio. Her father, Dr. Henry Wade, is a cousin of Hon. Benj. F. Wade, ex U. S. Senator.
