ROBERT N Rockhill, son of Samuel and Mary F., was born in this county, July 10, 1840. His wife was born in Pennsylvania, May 2, 1854. They have two sons, Charles W. and Albert R. Mrs. R. was Mary J. Blaize, daughter of Willson Blaize, who came from Pennsylvania in 1860. She has two brothers, Willson and Cyrus Blaize, and one sister, Callie. Mr. R. is one of a family of seven--William B., Thomas, Eleanor, Adonijah P., Sarah, Alfred and Robert N. Samuel Rockhill, father of Robert N., was born in the State of New Jersey, May 2, 1793, and came to this county (then Putnam County) in 1835. At that time the village of Lima contained only eight or ten houses and one little store. The county was a wilderness, and the wolf and wild cat had free range. After his farm was partly cleared, Mr. Rockhill laid out the village of Rockport. His energy, intelligence, and uprightness of character, won him many friends, and soon marked him as one worthy of public trust. Mr. Rockhill was a leading man in many enterprises for the improvement of the county--such as the building of a county infirmary, and securing a railroad through the county. He was a County Commissioner five years--held the offices of judge and justice of the peace twelve years--and various other offices. He was a sincere Christian, and for many years in pioneer times gave his house for public worship. He then gave the land for a church building and cemetery, and assisted in building the church. Mr. Rockhill had great faith in the success of the Union soldiers in the war of the Rebellion, and lost a son and a grandson in the war. Near the close of the war, while nursing a sick son in the hospital, he lost his own life.
